Artist Vicki Bolen’s work is inspired by the origami or “peace crane.” She has made thousands of cranes of many sizes and in many media, as a process that parallels her social justice work. For this privately commissioned mural, we chose to represent birds against a background of patterned Japanese papers. I used laser-cut plywood stencils to quickly create the intricate background and painted the birds from images solicited from local birders.
