What kinds of murals do you paint?

I paint colorful, dynamic images of an imagined Southwest–but I love to stretch outside of the visual vocabulary I’ve developed for those images. Whatever I design, I prefer saturated colors, visual patterns and flat areas to make punchy designs. I love murals that “hit me with music,” as Bob Marley said–murals that come across like a fanfare, and then surprise repeat viewers with hidden flourishes and sly winks.

How long does a mural take?

Image complexity, site-specific challenges, and desired outcomes all impact the duration of a mural’s production period. â€‹The biggest cost in mural production is skilled labor. A team of well-managed professional artists can get even big, complex projects done in just a week or two. The same project, executed just by me, would take six to eight weeks. Lastly, the painting medium used in a mural project impacts the length of a production period. When possible, I use aerosol paint to quickly execute base colors and to stencil repeating patterns. But mostly, I use brushes and rollers… and after years of practice, I’m pretty quick.

How much does it cost?

Murals vary widely in cost. To get a basic estimate of the cost of your project, you can use these tools:

  • An average mural of low to moderate complexity, with walls below 10’, costs $25/ft².*

  • Fill out my interest form and I'll give you a non-binding estimate on your project.

How is the image designed?

First, I listen to a client’s needs and ideas. Then I take into consideration the budget, timeline, the site, and scale of mural. Back in my studio, I synthesize all these parameters and opportunity and I make a design that I present to the client. I use a computer program to mock-up the design on a photo of the building. I provide one free revision to the design (additional revisions cost a small fee). Once the design is determined, we put together a contract and then I begin painting.

Why are you the right guy for the job?

I love what I do! This is my life’s purpose. I am authentically committed to my profession as an expression of my values, my vocation, and my calling. I have a lifetime of experience as an artist, in many different professional capacities. I have a lot of experience designing and producing art for clients like you, and I have a lot of experience making murals professionally. If you’re here, it’s probably because you like my work. If so, we both like big, bold, dynamic images that are really for everyone, including kids.

Who are your typical clients?

My clients believe in the power of art. My clients believe art has value, and that artists deserve to be paid. Some of them run public-facing businesses, where placemaking is a necessity for the success of their business. Some of them work in the gray areas between public and private enterprises, and understand that a mural is a part of a municipality’s visual ecosystem. Perhaps they’ve been to Denver, Miami, London or Berlin, and felt the energy of a city popping with murals everywhere. If you’re one of those people, and you’ve got a project in mind, reach out! It doesn’t matter what stage of the process you’re in — I’m here to help.

What types of jobs are you open to considering?

No job is too small or too humble; and no job is too big, too complex or too public. I’ve created backyard oasis murals for homeowners; big outdoor murals for a sports complex, a creative placemaking project, and for a restaurant; and indoor murals for a global tech company’s cafeteria. I’ve worked directly with residential, commercial and public clients; and I’ve worked for art consultants, interior architects, and for a complex coalition of community organizations, public art departments, state agencies and neighbors. I’ve worked on projects Many of my projects have taken place in my adopted home of Albuquerque, NM, but increasingly I’m doing projects around the region.
